What is the difference between coffee blends
Everyone has their go-to roast level, and we are here to help you understand the differences between each of these levels. The most common words to describe different levels of coffee roasting are Light , Medium , and Dark. Coffee roasting is one of the most influential factors of coffee taste. Roasting transforms green beans into the aromatic and flavorful coffee that wakes our senses in the morning.
Many large coffee companies roast in enclosed drums that can sometimes burn their beans. Our perforated drum roasters protect the smooth flavor and aroma of each roast level at a perfect temperature.
Before we break down all of the roast levels, here are a few talking points to help you differentiate between roasting levels:. Light Roast coffees are characterized by their light brown color, lack of oil on the beans, and light body or viscosity. However, the truth is exactly the opposite! As beans roast, the caffeine slowly cooks out of the bean. Therefore, because lightly roasted beans cook for a shorter time and at a lower temperature, they retain more caffeine from the original green coffee bean.
Medium Roast coffees are brown and have a little thicker body than a Light Roast. Unlike Light, Medium starts to take on a bit of the taste from the roasting process, losing some of the bright floral flavors that are typical of a Light Roast. Instead, they carry much more of a balanced flavor with a medium amount of caffeine.
Dark Roast coffees are dark brown, even close to a blackened color. The beans are characterized by drawn-out oil that glosses the surface. They saved money, but after doing this for a long enough time, the quality in the cup started to suffer. In reaction to that, single origin coffees became more popular because the quality was higher.
For most specialty coffee roasters today, blending has a lot to do with bringing their own unique flavor profile to the market. It also has to do with maintaining consistency across harvests and dealing with the availability of different coffees at different times of the year. Once you get to the end of the crop year, it can become difficult to maintain the quality you had in your blend at the beginning of the crop year.
Often times, roasters will substitute a fresher, higher quality coffee in their coffee to help maintain the quality of the blend.
Blending also allows a roaster to deal with problems that may happen at origin. Hawaiian Kona coffee is one example. Heck no! Single origin coffees are certainly interesting for their variety and the fact that they are all so very unique from each other.
Only drinking single origin coffee is like only eating a cake one ingredient at a time. I was not satisfied and ended making a cup of Starbucks French roast.
